BIRAC
BIRAC-PATH offers comprehensive patent facilitation, including co-funding or 100% grant-in-aid, to protect biotech innovations in India and abroad for eligible entities.
The Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), a Public Sector Undertaking of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, invites applications for its BIRAC-PATH (Patenting and Technology Transfer for Harnessing Innovations) programme. This initiative is designed to provide end-to-end support for the protection of valuable biotech innovations, both within India and internationally. The program aims to empower innovators by easing the financial and procedural burden of securing intellectual property rights, a critical step for commercialization and market entry. By offering strategic guidance and leveraging empaneled IP and Technology Transfer firms, BIRAC-PATH ensures that promising innovations receive robust IP protection.
The scope of support covers various stages of patent filing, including provisional and complete applications in India, as well as complex international filings like PCT, Convention, and National Phase applications. Beyond mere financial assistance, the program also incorporates essential services such as patent search and analysis, which includes patentability assessment, Freedom-to-Operate (FTO) analysis, state-of-the-art searches, and landscape studies. This holistic approach ensures that applicants not only secure their patents but also understand the broader IP landscape relevant to their innovations. While this specific call focuses on patent facilitation, the wider BIRAC-PATH program also encompasses technology transfer facilitation, creating a pathway from innovation to market.
BIRAC's commitment through this program is to foster a vibrant biotech innovation ecosystem by removing key barriers to IP protection, which is often a significant challenge for early-stage startups and research institutions. The program is vital for biotech entities that rely heavily on proprietary technology to gain a competitive edge. By ensuring IP ownership remains with the applicant while BIRAC facilitates the process, the program encourages direct engagement and long-term benefit for the innovators.
