iDEX DISC 12 (Re-Open) – IAF

Defence Innovation Organisation

About This Scheme

Up to ₹1.5 crore for IAF helicopter glide path landing system.

iDEX DISC 12 (Re-Open) is a focused defence innovation challenge launched under the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) framework by the Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO), Ministry of Defence. This re-opened challenge features a single problem statement issued by the Indian Air Force (IAF) and invites MSMEs, startups, and innovators to design and develop a Helicopter Electronic Glide Path-based Landing System.

The challenge addresses a critical operational gap in helicopter landing capabilities at helipads, particularly in hilly terrain and poor visibility conditions. Currently, most helicopter landings rely heavily on visual references, restricting safe operations during adverse weather. The IAF seeks a transportable and configurable system capable of generating an electronic glide path for helicopters, with built-in failure monitoring, degradation alerts, and compatibility with aircraft Instrument Landing Systems (ILS).

The proposed system must provide electronic glide path signals, support non-standard glide path angles, generate visual or aural warnings in case of failure, and monitor helicopter flight paths. The solution may incorporate novel ground-based equipment concepts and should be adaptable for deployment across multiple helipad locations. The expected outcome is a deployable prototype capable of enabling safe helicopter landings in low-visibility environments, with future adaptability for transport-class aircraft operations from Advanced Landing Grounds or similar airstrips.
