Scholarship value: Full Funding, Full tuition fees + stipend PhD Research Project: Mechanisms of Alternative Splicing in Neurodegeneration and Ageing Project

Overview

  • This PhD project explores how alternative RNA splicing contributes to ageing, neurodegeneration, and anti-ageing therapies, specifically reduced mTOR signaling and dietary restriction (DR).
  • Recent findings have linked alternative splicing to rejuvenation effects observed in Drosophila melanogaster under mTOR suppression and DR conditions.
  • The project will manipulate splicing mechanisms, focusing on spliceosome components and specific genes to measure impacts on lifespan, neuronal functioning, and neurodegeneration.

Stipend
A tax-free annual stipend at the UKRI rate (£19,237 for 2024/25). Research Costs & Tuition Fees: Covered at the UK rate.

Duration: 4 years, fully funded. Training: Extensive training in experimental biology, functional genetics, and quantitative analysis.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to both UK (home) and international (including EU) students.
  • Candidates should have (or expect to gain) at least an upper second-class honours degree or equivalent in biological, chemical, physical science, or mathematics disciplines.
